Olesya Isayuk in Czechia: Presenting the Book Roman Shukhevych. Life of a Legend

Historian and Doctor of Humanities Olesya Isayuk presented the book “Roman Shukhevych. Life of a Legend” in Prague and Jihlava as part of the “Relevant Dialogues” programme. Two packed days of lectures and discussions drew an engaged audience with thoughtful questions and expert answers.
Olesya Isayuk is a researcher at the Centre for Research of the Liberation Movement and the National Museum-Memorial “Prison on Lontskoho”. She specialises in the period of Nazi occupation in Ukraine, particularly the repression of participants in the liberation movement.
Shukhevych as a Figure of His Era
The book also carries the subtitle “Portrait against the Backdrop of an Era” — and it was in this spirit that Olesya Isayuk built her presentation. Roman Shukhevych — Supreme Commander of the UPA from 1943 to 1950 — emerges not only as an outstanding figure in the history of the struggle for Ukrainian independence, but also as a prominent representative of the true Ukrainian elite.
The discussion touched on the question of what made him an elite figure. The author vividly reconstructed the era and revealed the commander’s personality from an unexpected angle — as a musician, dancer, and creative, multi-faceted person, not only a talented military leader.
Dialogue with the Audience
Audience members asked engaged, substantive questions and received expert, well-argued answers. The “Relevant Dialogues” format allowed the presentation to become a genuine intellectual exchange between the historian and the public.
The presentations in Prague and Jihlava formed part of broader efforts to popularise knowledge of Ukrainian history and the liberation movement among Czech and international audiences.
